Nina Annabelle Märkl has been invited for a residency program at Yamakiwa Art Hotel to create and present new works, inspired by her research into Japanese Sumi-e paintings and everyday experience during the stay at the traditional farmhouse in a rural village.

Märkl’s works shift between drawing, installation and sculpture, combining  narrative with both abstract and abundant elements, to create spatial drawings like a kaleidoscope, that invite the beholder to perceive different perspectives.

For the exhibition Time MachineMärkl developed a new series of drawings, with 100year-old Japanese paper from the local workshop. She employs the fragments collected from history, culture and everyday life, and transform them into possible constellations by using the both sides of the papers, each generating a system of their own, which is parallel to each other.

Nina Annabelle Märkl (b. Germany) received Diploma at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 2009. 今夏、ニナ・アナベル・メルケル（ドイツ）がやまきわ美術館におけるアーティスト・イン・レジデンスを行い、日本の墨絵に対するリサーチや、日本の古民家での滞在中の日々の暮らしの有り様から着想を得て、新作の制作を行います。

メルケルはドローイング、インスタレーション、立体作品の間を行き来しながら、抽象的で豊かなイメージを物語に結びつけ、万華鏡のような立体ドローイングを作り、鑑賞者に様々な視点を体験させてくれます。

今展覧会Time Machineでは、地域の和紙工房で100年前に作られた紙を用いて、新作のドローイングを展示します。紙の両面を使うことによって、各面がそれぞれ独自でありながら、並列の世界を保ち、歴史、文化、日常生活の中から集められた要素による、多様な配座の可能性を生み出します。

UK-based artist duo Hanqing & Mona (China and S. Korea) have been invited to undertake the six-week summer residency in Yamakiwa Gallery. The artists have created a series of site-specific installations in response to the gallery space, a former historic farmhouse in Kamiebiike village.

Hanqing & Mona’s new work combines photography, house remnants, and industrial materials which local villagers use for remodelling purposes. The work reflects the ever-changing natural environment and its fluid relationship with local human construction.

The artists developed their practice inspired by the daily life activities and movements in the gallery, seeking to reveal the historic, once disused space. Their work traces the material connection with the house’s exterior, questions how natural elements are coexistent with, intertwined with, and transformed into artificial materials, while the human construction is yet being re-occupied by nature.

Hanqing & Mona studied photography and sculpture at the Royal College of Art (London). Their works have been exhibited at institutions including the Institute of Contemporary Art, Camden Art Centre, Talbot Rice Gallery and OCI Museum of Art. As a duo they are members of the Royal British Society of Sculptors, and winners of the New Contemporaries, Gilbert Bayes Award, and OCI Young Creatives.

今夏、イギリスを拠点とするアーティストデュオ、ハンチン＆モナ（中国、韓国出身）がやまきわ美術館で６週間のレジデンスを行いました。彼らは、新潟県の上鰕池集落に残る、古い農家のギャラリー空間に応えながら、場のあり方を活かしたインスタレーションを制作しました。

この新作は、写真、家の中にある古い残存物、そして地域の人たちが改築に使う工業製品を組み合わせています。作品は、絶え間なく変わりゆく自然環境と、それが人間の建造物に柔軟に適応する様を映しています。

彼らはギャラリー内での日々の活動や動作から着想を得ながら、長い歴史を持ちつつも、一度は捨てられた場について解き明かそうとしています。作品は家の外側との物理的なつながりを辿りつつ、自然の要素が人工物と並存し、結びつき、人工的に変容し、そしてふたたび、自然によって人間の作る建造物が自然によって支配されていく在り様を問いかけます。

While an artist in residence at Yamakiwa Gallery (Mountain Edge Gallery) Ebony Rose has created a new installation and a series of drawings in response to the traditional Japanese farmhouse setting and her exchanges with the villagers. The installation continues through multiple spaces and common to Rose’s work there is an evocation and experiencing of time: the present, the residue touch of the hand, and phenomenon changing.In this new body of work darkness is emphasized and death alluded to. Inspired by the Japanese Zen word shoji that translates to life-death where these two words are only separated and connected by a small hyphen[2], in this installation death and dark to life and light are not so much separate entities but parts of the whole.

エボニー・ローズはやまきわ美術館におけるアーティスト・イン・レジデンスを行い、地域の人たちとのやりとりや日本の古民家の有り様に応えながら、新作のインスタレーションとドローイングの連作を作ります。インスタレーションは幾つかの空間を連ねるもので、ローズの他の作品に多く見られるように、現在という時、残された手の感触、現象の変化など、時間感覚を喚起させるものとなります。またこの新作においては、暗闇が強い存在感を持ち、死を暗示するものになっています。「生死（しょうじ）」という仏教の言葉は「life-death」と英語に訳されます。この二つの語が小さなハイフンで分けられ、繋がる[2]ことに触発され、このインスタレーションでは死と暗闇は生と光と大きく隔たれておらず、大きな全体の部分となっています。

Generally we believe our memory is kept inside of our brain. But is the memory, aroused by external stimulation, entirely our own?
Is it not possible to think that there is a single, complexly intertwined memory, stored in a wider world, outside the limits of ourselves?

Where does our memory exist?
When was it embedded there?
To whom does it belong?

In this exhibition, we would like to present some attempts at answering these questions.
Three artists interacted with the nature and culture of the region of Yamakiwa gallery. The outcomes are based on their own methodology, and indicate how memory beyond ourselves, exists and performs.


通常、自分の記憶は自分の脳の中にあると私たちは信じています。
でも例えば、外部からのきっかけで引き出されるような記憶は、果たして本当に自分の記憶だと言いきれるのでしょうか？
自分という枠を超え、外部を含めた大きい世界の中に、複雑に絡み合った記憶が存在しているとも言えないでしょうか？

どこに自分の記憶は存在するのか
それはいつ刻まれた記憶なのか
自分の中にある記憶は誰のものなのか

この疑問に答えてくれるかもしれない幾つかの試みを、この展示で紹介したいと思います。
出展する３人の作家は、やまきわ美術館やその周辺地域との相互作用の中から、それぞれ固有のやり方で、自分を超えた記憶の在りようを呈示しています。

Yamakiwa Gallery is pleased to present Traces and Shadows by Maya Cohen Levy, an exhibition which consists of two parts, one taking place in the gallery and the other in HAGISO [HAGI ART] in Tokyo. The exhibition will feature various bodies of work, from site-specific installations, sculptures and peeled photographs, including new works completed during their residency in the gallery in Tokamachi, Japan. The artist re-creates the landscapes of Japan and Israel, connected through her inner vision which appears as a unsettled, ghostlike presence.

Maya Cohen Levy is a prominent Israeli artist that created her own unique path, and is consistently attracting interest within the Israeli Art Scene.

Her affinity with Japan began rather early, after graduating her Art studies in Israel, attracted by its philosophy and aesthetics, she came to study Sumi-e in Japan, and the leaf-like brush strokes which culminated into ‘peeled photographs’, a technique developed by Cohen Levy. She actually peels with a knife the thin emulsion surface of the photograph and reveals the white paper underneath. The leaf-like cuts play with the black and white, shades and light in the photograph and create a new rhythmic movement and a new order within a given landscape. It is a process of destruction and creation that take place simultaneously. It is a transverse process to painting. The white is being exposed so that the absence becomes present.

Artist’s biography

Maya Cohen Levy was born in Tel Aviv in 1955. Over the years she has taught at Kalisher School of Art, The Bezalel Acadamy for Art and Design in Jerusalem and at the Tel Aviv University.

She currently lives and works in Tel Aviv. In her present work, Cohen Levy, who is represented by Gordon Gallery, utilizes several mediums concurrently, comprising painting, photography and sculpture.

Her solo exhibitions include The Israel Museum (1994), The Tel Aviv Museum of Art (2000) and The Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art (2005), as well as a multitude of solo exhibitions in galleries in Tel Aviv, London, New York, Munich and Berlin.

Her works are featured in many noteworthy collections, including The Israel Museum, Tel Aviv Museum of Art and The Jewish Museum in New York, as well as various other public and private collections in Israel and worldwide.

　やまきわ美術館は今春、マヤ・コーヘン・レヴィの展覧会 影と跡 Traces and Shadowsを開催致します。本展は二つのパートからなっており、一つは当館にて、もう一つは東京のHAGISO [HAGI ART]で行われます。展示には、作家が当館において滞在制作した新作も含まれ、場の特異性を考慮して作られたインスタレーション、立体作品、切削写真から構成されています。作品には作家の内なるイメージが、つかの間の魂のような存在として現れ、日本とイスラエルの風景を再構成し、結び合わせています。

　マヤ・コーヘン・レヴィは個性的な経歴を持つ著名なイスラエル作家で、これまでイスラエルアートシーンの興味を常に引きつけてきました。

　日本に対するレヴィの興味は早くから始まっています。その哲学と美学に魅せられた彼女はイスラエルの美術大学を卒業後、墨絵を学ぶために来日し、葉のような形をした筆の運び方を身につけました。その特徴は、のちに「切削写真」で顕著に現れています。これは作家が開発した技法で、写真の薄い感光剤の表面を実際にナイフで削ぎ取り、下の白い紙があらわになるというものです。葉の形をした切り口は、写真中の黒と白、影と光に絡み合い、新しいリズムと規律を既存の風景の中に生み出します。これは破壊と創造が同時発生するプロセスでありながら、また絵画とは逆の過程でもあります。白が顕になることで不在が存在するようになるのです。

作家略歴

　マヤ・コーヘン・レヴィは1955年テルアビブに生まれ、カリシャー美術学校、エルサレムのベザレル美術デザインアカデミー、テルアビブ大学で長年にわたり教職についてきた。現在はテルアビブ在住でゴードンギャラリーに所属、複数の素材を合わせて使用し、絵画、写真、彫刻を制作する。

個展はイスラエル美術館（1994）、テルアビブ美術館（2000）、ヘルズリヤ現代美術館（2005）を含め、テルアビブ、ロンドン、ニューヨーク、ミュンヘン、ベルリンのギャラリーなどで多数行われている。

　作品はイスラエル美術館、テルアビブ美術館、ニューヨークのユダヤ美術館など、イスラエル及び世界の優れたコレクションに収蔵されている。

　多くの受賞歴があり、ミシェル・キコイン賞（テルアビブ大学美術学部）、イスラエル文化教育省アワード、ダン・サンデル彫刻賞（テルアビブ美術館）、IDBアワード（イスラエル美術館）がある。
