The director of Yamakiwa Art Hotel Yuri Fukushima has been invited to curate an exhibition “Memories in Movement”, featuring six artists from Korea and Japan, at an independent gallery placeMAK in Seoul.

Time, as we experience it, is not a rhythm that thrums along a thread in a single direction, but a set of endlessly diverging strands that expand and contract in harmony with the present. It is a physical structure, manifested into reality by a technique composed of the individual and collective experiences which we all share. Time can be signified by the memories which are transmitted through all of our bodies and souls.

In this exhibition, we hope to reveal the complex and shifting interrelationships between time and memory through our artists’ differing perspectives and methods.

Natsumi Sakamoto’s latest work, an installation that employs video and woodblock prints, takes as its subject the superstitions surrounding the Scottish witch hunts and rowan-wood apotropaic talismans, through which it explores the question of the inheritance of memory. Beginning in the 15thcentury, witch hunts spread throughout Europe. Rowan is believed to provide protection from sorcery, as well as from diseases and disaster. Drawing together the echoes of these images, this work captures the realities of the period and the conditions of the unfortunate, many of whom worked as dairy farmers, with episodes that transmit messages to us that transcend the era in which they took place. Witches possess a dual nature, binding within themselves both cursed death and the hope of recovery. This work stands as a monument against the tragic oblivion of those witches whose reality was given form by a manifestation of communities’ collective will.

Through performance and video works, Jungsik Lee expresses the daily rigors of living with HIV, quietly describing the insidious violence of forgetting one’s self as a consequence of discrimination. This piece, structured around daily logs of medicine dosage records, reflects the existence of an artist living under the yolk of disease. Lee, in the middle of an irreplaceable path through life, is nonetheless seen by society solely as a carrier of HIV. This work imbues meaning to the anguish of the incompleteness of an existence overshadowed by the virus, and constitutes an attempt at healing by casting one’s gaze beyond the self. Lee calls on us to sincerely question the ways in which we confront one another’s lives and share in their existence.

Miyuki Yamashita’s work takes images from memory as its starting point, drawing upon the vigorous strength of improvisational techniques, exhibited in a series of deft drawings. Based on photographs of a tightrope-walking young woman captured five years prior, Yamashita uses pencils, watercolors, and masking tape to swiftly interweave images and the movements of her hands, drawing also upon the energy of the surroundings. Rooted in the instant captured by the lens, the artist explores a proliferation of possibilities through an eternally recurring present completely free of stagnation, while continuously confronting both memory and the existence of the self.

Similarly to Yamashita, Ji Seon Kim produces pictures based on memory, but has chosen a contrasting method for representing the resonance of accumulated images. Returning to her studio after spending time communing in the depths of nature, she gradually gives shape to the fragmentary impressions left on her body by the colors, sounds, humidities, and temperatures of the wilderness, capturing them on canvases of thirty to forty centimeters square. She now pours her indefatigable curiosity and energy of spirit into constructing what she calls her ‘Wonder-site’, a massive aerial landscape. Standing at the brink of the known and unknown, she invites onlookers onto the stage of adventure.

Isoya Hirofumi’s Lagis a work comprised of photographs that capture the images of falling picture-frames, presented within those selfsame frames. These connected photographs crystallise an instantaneous fragment of the past, while simultaneously challenging us with vertigo and inversions that manifest the resonance between the present moment and lost time. As this work pivots on the physical properties of the frames themselves, each instance is irreproducible. While possessing abstract expression, our physical and corporeal reality, which exists in the here and now, spontaneously becomes apparent as we interact with this work.

Drawing our attention to the “slippage” of artificially created objects, Woon Zung has created a video piece conceived from a Hiroshima geological report. Seventy years after the Atomic Bomb annihilated ninety percent of the city and robbed seventy thousand humans of their lives, the authors discovered fragments of glass washed up on Hiroshima beach, remnants of structures and debris fused by the extreme temperatures at the time of the explosion. This work uses scans of these shards of plastic and stone, as well as images of the demolished city, revealing sequences of depictions of fire, dreams, coagulation, resurrection, mimesis, and pollution. This accumulation of fragmentary memories of the events transmitted to us by those surviving objects that transcend time and space function for us as gateways to new imaginaries and experiences.

By displaying the images and processes of a multiplicity of memories, this exhibition aims to make us contemplate beyond time and space, subtly and dynamically encouraging us to explore the horizons of our experiences.

Nina Annabelle Märkl has been invited for a residency program at Yamakiwa Art Hotel to create and present new works, inspired by her research into Japanese Sumi-e paintings and everyday experience during the stay at the traditional farmhouse in a rural village.

Märkl’s works shift between drawing, installation and sculpture, combining  narrative with both abstract and abundant elements, to create spatial drawings like a kaleidoscope, that invite the beholder to perceive different perspectives.
For the exhibition Time MachineMärkl developed a new series of drawings, with 100year-old Japanese paper from the local workshop. She employs the fragments collected from history, culture and everyday life, and transform them into possible constellations by using the both sides of the papers, each generating a system of their own, which is parallel to each other.

Nina Annabelle Märkl (b. Germany) received Diploma at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 2009. Her work has been exhibited in Germany and abroad, includingThe Big Sleep, Haus der Kunst, Munich (2019), Morphosen, Gallery Straihammer und Seidenschwann, Vienna (2019), x=change, German Consulate General, New York City (2018), Torsionen, Gallery MaxWeberSixFriedrich, Munich (2017).

UK-based artist duo Hanqing & Mona (China and S. Korea) have been invited to undertake the six-week summer residency in Yamakiwa Gallery. The artists have created a series of site-specific installations in response to the gallery space, a former historic farmhouse in Kamiebiike village.

Hanqing & Mona’s new work combines photography, house remnants, and industrial materials which local villagers use for remodelling purposes. The work reflects the ever-changing natural environment and its fluid relationship with local human construction.

The artists developed their practice inspired by the daily life activities and movements in the gallery, seeking to reveal the historic, once disused space. Their work traces the material connection with the house’s exterior, questions how natural elements are coexistent with, intertwined with, and transformed into artificial materials, while the human construction is yet being re-occupied by nature.

Hanqing & Mona studied photography and sculpture at the Royal College of Art (London). Their works have been exhibited at institutions including the Institute of Contemporary Art, Camden Art Centre, Talbot Rice Gallery and OCI Museum of Art. As a duo they are members of the Royal British Society of Sculptors, and winners of the New Contemporaries, Gilbert Bayes Award, and OCI Young Creatives.

About
A contemporary dancer Ema Yuasa will be invited to do a residency for dance workshop and a talk at Yamakiwa Gallery. This workshop is developed from the everyday body gestures of local residents whose life is based around a traditional farming, to find the possibility of communication through bodily language between people with different backgrounds.
Our way of using body or behaviour is deeply connected to our living, and to the system for evaluation such as manner or class system. We would like to bring opportunities to question such norms set for judging what is right or beautiful, which is taken for granted in everyday life. We believe this will help us gaining an open attitude to other people who have different ways of living or sets of values.

“When the tongues of flames are in-folded into the crowned knot of fire
And the fire and the rose are one.[1]” -T.S. Elliot

While an artist in residence at Yamakiwa Gallery (Mountain Edge Gallery) Ebony Rose has created a new installation and a series of drawings in response to the traditional Japanese farmhouse setting and her exchanges with the villagers. The installation continues through multiple spaces and common to Rose’s work there is an evocation and experiencing of time: the present, the residue touch of the hand, and phenomenon changing. In this new body of work darkness is emphasized and death alluded to. Inspired by the Japanese Zen word shoji that translates to life-death where these two words are only separated and connected by a small hyphen[2], in this installation death and dark to life and light are not so much separate entities but parts of the whole.

Peleg Dishon has been invited to carry out a residency program “Japan-Israel AIR Project Yamakiwa/WAITINGROOM”, organised by Yamakiwa Art Hotel (Niigata), WAITINGROOM (Tokyo), and Embassy of Israel. Dishon was selected from the 99 applications in the open call and stayed at Tokamachi in NIigata, for a month. The exhibition at WAITINGROOM (Tokyo) will consist of the works he creates during the residency, inspired by the environment and the life of local residents.

Dishon, influenced by the culture of traditional Jewish paper cutouts, uses paper as core material in his artwork over the years. As an approach to both Israel and Japan, he refers the book, Jerusalem Rebuilt: A Daydream, written in 1918 by Boris Schatz, the founder of Bezalel (the first academy for fine art in Israel), and proposes to create a kite by paper cutouts. In the book, Schatz describes Jerusalem one hundred years later in 2018 - our present time. Jerusalem Rebuiltis a futuristic, Zionist utopia – a socialist, peace loving society that uses fine art to build the nation. Schatz proposes Japan, which he perceived as a nation basing its foreign trade on exporting fine art, as a model for his Utopian society. In his vision, the Zionist state will base its economic system on exporting fine art made by artists from Bezalel.

However, now in the midst of 2018, Jerusalem is at the center of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with the transfer of the US Embassy to the city and the 70th anniversary celebrations for the establishment of the State of Israel. As part of the violent clashes, kites, a symbol of freedom and hope, became weapon as burning kites from Gaza sparked fire in Israel. This happened while Dishon was writing the proposal for this program.

Generally we believe our memory is kept inside of our brain. But is the memory, aroused by external stimulation, entirely our own?
Is it not possible to think that there is a single, complexly intertwined memory, stored in a wider world, outside the limits of ourselves?

Where does our memory exist?
When was it embedded there?
To whom does it belong?

In this exhibition, we would like to present some attempts at answering these questions.
Three artists interacted with the nature and culture of the region of Yamakiwa gallery. The outcomes are based on their own methodology, and indicate how memory beyond ourselves, exists and performs.
